Tom Waits has shared a taster of his new spoken word piece ‘The Fly’, the B-side to his Massive Attack collaboration ‘Boots On The Ground’. The darkly comic poem is in the tradition of his previous tracks and features lines such as ‘No-one’s had a life stranger than you / You know famine, you know war, you know danger’ and ‘No-one’ll weep when you die’. The piece is part of an exclusive vinyl release, with all proceeds going to organisations funding mental health resources for veterans and legal advocacy for immigrant communities.
Waits’ collaboration with Massive Attack is his first new music since his 2011 album ‘Bad As Me’. The project has been praised by both artists, with Waits stating that ‘man’s fiasco folly is a feast for the flies’ and Massive Attack describing the track as arriving in an ‘atmosphere of chaos’. Waits is also set to release a curated collection of covers and appear on an upcoming tribute album, with more music and projects expected in the future.
