Eddie Murphy was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the American Film Institute ceremony, held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. The star-studded tribute featured appearances from Bill Burr, Kevin Hart, Eva Longoria, and Kenan Thompson, among others. Murphy, who has had a nearly 50-year career spanning stand-up, television, and film, was met with a standing ovation as he accepted the award.
The tribute will premiere as a special on Netflix on May 31. Comedians such as Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle praised Murphy’s influence across generations, with Rock saying, ‘There is no us without you.’ Spike Lee, who presented the award to Murphy, noted that Murphy has ‘pushed culture forward’ throughout his career. The gala raised over $2.5 million to support AFI’s nonprofit education programs, and Murphy expressed his gratitude, saying, ‘Thank you for giving me this night that I will remember forever and ever and ever.’
