The UK music industry has responded to the government’s decision to ditch plans allowing AI firms to use copyrighted works without permission. The move has been welcomed by industry figures, including Paul McCartney, Kate Bush, and Elton John, who had campaigned against the proposed changes. However, they argue that more needs to be done to protect artists’ work from being used without permission or payment.
UK Music Chief Executive Tom Kiehl has urged the government to go further and rule out any alternative copyright exceptions that could negatively impact creators. The Ivors Academy has also welcomed the announcement but emphasized that the work is far from done, calling for a framework that requires AI companies to license creative works with authorization from creators and pay fair remuneration. The industry is now looking to work with the government to set a concrete timeline for action on AI and copyright.
