Self Esteem, whose real name is Rebecca Lucy Taylor, has recently opened up about her shift to acting, citing that she has been ‘rock-bottom depressed because of music’. This revelation comes after the release of her third studio album ‘A Complicated Woman’, which was later transformed into a theatrical stage show in London’s West End. Taylor has now taken on the lead role in a revival of David Hare’s 1975 play ‘Teeth ‘n’ Smiles’ at the Duke of York’s Theatre, playing a rock star with self-destructive tendencies.
Taylor explained that her diversion into acting was due to feeling ‘knackered’ and ‘fed up’ after the intense period surrounding her album release. She stated that working on ‘Teeth ‘n’ Smiles’ has helped her recapture her creative drive, and that the play has made her realize she ‘felt a bit dead’ for a while. Despite her struggles, Taylor will continue to make music, with three outdoor shows scheduled in the UK this summer and opening acts for Pulp and Florence + The Machine.
