Pussy Riot co-founder Nadya Tolokonnikova has been added to Russia’s federal wanted list. The punk activist and artist was named a ‘foreign agent’ by Russia’s Ministry of Justice in 2021. Tolokonnikova has been indicted following an investigation by the country’s Investigative Committee, accused of violating Russia’s ‘foreign agent law’. She is accused of flouting Part 2 of Article 330.1 of the national criminal code, which carries a punishment of up to 2 years’ prison.
Tolokonnikova’s indictment comes weeks after Pussy Riot staged a protest outside US tech company Ubiquiti’s Manhattan headquarters. The collective has a history of protests, including a 2012 protest piece, ‘A Punk Prayer’, and performances at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics and 2018 World Cup Finals. Tolokonnikova has also released music, including the debut Pussy Riot mixtape ‘Matriarchy Now’, and collaborated with artists such as Avenged Sevenfold and Tove Lo.
