HUNTR/X’s ‘Golden’ from KPop Demon Hunters has made history by becoming the latest song to top the Billboard Hot 100 and win the Oscar for Best Original Song. This achievement marks the first time a song has joined this exclusive list since ‘Shallow’ from A Star Is Born seven years ago. ‘Golden’ spent eight nonconsecutive weeks at the top of the Hot 100 last year, a feat only matched by two other Oscar-winning songs: Debby Boone’s ‘You Light Up My Life’ and Eminem’s ‘Lose Yourself’.
Only 18 songs have achieved the double distinction of hitting No. 1 on the Hot 100 and winning the Best Original Song Oscar. The first song to achieve this was B.J. Thomas’ ‘Raindrops Keep Fallin’ On My Head’ in 1970. Other notable artists who have topped the Hot 100 with Oscar-winning songs include Barbra Streisand and Jennifer Warnes, who have each done so twice. The 1970s and 1980s were a heyday for these double victories, but they have become less common in recent decades.
