A London builder, George Georgiou, has denied rumors that he is the elusive street artist Banksy. Georgiou was mistaken for Banksy after he was seen installing Perspex around one of the artist’s works in North London in 2024. He has told those making the claims to ‘grow up and get a life’, stating that it’s ‘really annoying, it’s ridiculous and it’s disturbing’. Georgiou explained that he was putting Perspex around the artwork as a favor to his sons, who owned the building.
Georgiou’s denial comes amid a new investigation by Reuters, which claims that Robin Gunningham, also known as David Jones, is the real Banksy. The builder has expressed frustration at the constant speculation, saying it’s disrupting his day-to-day life and work. Banksy’s true identity remains a mystery, with the artist’s lawyer stating that revealing his identity would ‘violate his privacy, interfere with his art and put him in danger’. Despite the rumors, Georgiou wishes he could be Banksy, saying ‘no one would know who the fuck I am’ if he were the artist.
