Flea has expressed his admiration for the new Netflix documentary about former Red Hot Chili Peppers member Hillel Slovak. The documentary, titled ‘The Rise of the Red Hot Chili Peppers: Our Brother, Hillel’, explores the band’s early years and the impact of Slovak, who died in 1988. Despite the band distancing themselves from the project, Flea recently posted on Instagram, stating that the film ‘filled my heart right to the top’ and that he’s grateful it exists to honor Slovak’s memory.
The documentary features Slovak’s own voice, regenerated by AI, bringing his journals to life. The band had clarified that they were interviewed for the project out of love and respect for Slovak but did not consider it an official documentary. Flea’s positive response comes after the band’s frontman, Anthony Kiedis, reflected on Slovak’s legacy, saying his energy ‘has never truly faded’ and that he remains in their hearts. The documentary has made headlines for its unique use of AI technology to showcase Slovak’s voice and journals.
