A recent study by non-profit organisation Anika has found that 81 models of headphones from popular brands such as Apple, Sony, and Samsung contain harmful hormone-disrupting chemicals. The study, titled ‘The Sound of Contamination’, discovered that all tested models contained industrial chemicals like bisphenols, phthalates, and flame retardants, which have been linked to endocrine disruption and health issues like cancer and infertility.
The findings have led some retailers to remove affected models from their shelves. In related news, United Airlines has announced that passengers who play music without headphones on flights may face a permanent ban. The airline will provide free headphones to passengers who forget theirs. This comes as playing audio out loud in public becomes an increasingly contentious issue, with some calling for fines for ‘headphone dodgers’ on public transport.
